City and Guilds Distinction

Just gained a Distinction in my City and Guilds in machine embroidery. I Completed the course at South Worcestershire College, or as most of us know it, Malvern College of Art. It's been an eventful year, starting in September 2015 completed the first week then went to Peru for 4 weeks. So a lot of catching up had to be done.
Starting with drawing, which is not a skill I posses.

I really struggled to get going and had to find a space in my head to overcome my fear of drawing. For a while it got worse, we had to draw a stack of fabric and I even tried printing it onto acetate, putting it on an old overhead projector and tracing it!!! Still useless!!

As the course progressed onto the free machine embroidery I found more confidence. Not sure why I can't draw with a pencil but I can with a sewing machine! This sheep embroidery is taken from a Henry Moore picture.
For my final piece of work I chose to develop the theme i used for my h.Art exhibition lasts year, Making Memories. I used a cotton organza fabric which I bought from Doughty's in Hereford. This versatile fabric enabled me to trap items between layers so they would show through, print onto it and embroider into it. I printed photos of my memories, a map of where I live, trapped items of significance such as a locket. Printing onto the fabric using an Epson home printer and Thermofax screens. Finally I free machine embroidered onto the top layer.
